Cary was not always interested in engineering. For as long as he can remember he was interested in astronomy. He read all he could find about it, and when he was in middle school his father bought him a small telescope. In high school Cary built his own telescopes, grinding mirrors and designing and building mountings. All this time he thought he was doing science. Today, he recognizes that like many scientists, he especially enjoyed the engineering part of the work.
Pursuing an engineering career is a lot of work! They take full course loads of fundamental math and science classes while leading student clubs, pursuing internships, and serving in the community. I sometimes wonder if they have any down time!
Maricela Paramo is a freshman at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln studying civil engineering. She was born in Grand Island, Nebraska but grew up in Michoacàn, Mexico until she was 8. Moving to the United States was not an easy transition for her, but it was definitely worth it. It opened up so many opportunities for her to explore and grow as a person. Now as a student intern for Click2Science Maricela’s goal is to encourage people to pursue STEM majors.
There are some girls who still grow up thinking that engineering and science aren’t meant for women. It is important to remember women can thrive in the world of engineering. Purity Muhia is one example of many great women in Engineering.
